• Atacama Evoque Eco 60-40 SE2音响架

At first glance, there seems little difference between Atacama’s Evoque Eco 60-40 SE2 and its Award-winning predecessor, the Evoque Eco 60-40. But if you think that means Atacama’s engineers have been twiddling their collective thumbs over the past few years, you’d be wrong.  Take a closer look, and you realise that there have been a whole host of tweaks to eke out even more performance from this rack. Build Place the two generations next to each other, and the most obvious difference is that the bamboo shelves on the SE2 version have slightly curved sides. This helps to reduce the build-up of internal standing waves, something reinforced by the revised shaping of the distinctive cut-outs on the underside. Great care has been taken to control the flow of mechanical energy in the rack’s structure. This energy could originate in the hi-fi components (vibrations caused by their mains transformers or CD transports, for example) or be generated by the speakers and try to work its way back into your electronics through the floor.  To deal with these vibrations, each leg is decoupled from the shelf it is attached to. The legs (which come in standard length options of 165, 215, 265 and 300mm) also have an internally mounted weight that controls how it resonates, and is terminated by a slightly rounded brass spikes to offer a degree of mechanical grounding between layers. There are three shelf finish options – the standard finish is natural Bamboo, but medium finish bamboo and a dark version are also available at a £20 premium per shelf. The legs are only available in one colour, and that’s satin black. The Evoque Eco 60-40 SE2 arrives flat packed, but it barely takes 15 minutes before we’re up and running. It feels well engineered and is nicely finished. If we do have a complaint, it’s that we would like Atacama to give some attention to cable management. The lack of it means the resultant spaghetti of cables from our system looks a little messy. Compatibility There are some people who don’t believe that an equipment support can make much of a difference to the sound of their system. But as we try a range of products on both the Atacama and our well used Hi-fi Rack Podium we’re left in no doubt as to the improvements such supports can make. While a rack is obviously not in the signal path, if it handles all that vibrational energy well, the system can do its job better. Performance There are some people who don’t believe that an equipment support can make much of a difference to the sound of their system. But as we try a range of products on both the Atacama and our well used Hi-fi Rack Podium we’re left in no doubt as to the improvements such supports can make. While a rack is obviously not in the signal path, if it handles all that vibrational energy well, the system can do its job better. We’re equally pleased to note that both Onkyo’s A-9010 budget integrated amplifier (£199) and Burmester’s 088 preamp (£17,350) respond in a similar manner. Both these amplifiers sound clearer and better organised when used on the Evoque than when sat on a typical sideboard or table.  The comparison with the Hi-fi Racks Podium proves instructive. Both are a notable step ahead of non-dedicated alternatives, but it’s the Atacama we keep returning to when we want to hear exactly what’s going on. While lacking the attractive weight and warmth that the Podium encourages in our set-up, when used on the Evoque, our electronics improve when it comes to dynamic expression, precision and rhythmic coherence. Verdict Paying just short of £600 for a three-tier Evoque Eco SE2 is hardly a trivial sum of money, but if you really want to hear just how good your system can sound, it’s an investment worth making.

  • OPPO Enco Q1

MISSION STATEMENT The goal for the Basis SuperArm has been simple, clear, and direct from the beginning: “To fully maximize the extraction of every detail from LP records, the full dynamics available from the grooves, without editorializing in the process”.  Most tonearms fit the description “tonearm” quite well: they have their own “tone” and character.  The Basis SuperArm is designed to be as free as possible from any tone, character, or coloration in order to recapture the original recorded event as closely as possible.  Beyond a very literal extraction of the music from the grooves of the record, special attention was paid to the extremely delicate signal from the vertical modulation of the record grooves which contains the small “difference signal”, the left channel minus right channel information. The stereo width is revelatory, along with very precise focus of the locations of each instrument, voice, and sound source.   HISTORY Basis designer A.J. Conti began investigating tonearm design in 1984 when he designed the original Basis turntable, the Debut.  From that start Conti has tested over 125 tonearms on the Debut and subsequent Basis turntables.  Basis introduced its Vector tonearm in 2001, which was quickly received as a state of the art product.  The physics of tonearm behavior continued to be an obsession for Conti, with research and testing constantly progressing. The Basis SuperArm 9 and 12.5 are the result of A.J.’s continued research, his experience in turntable, tonearm, and cable design and manufacturing, along with his education in engineering and pre-audio background in the aerospace/defense field.  In 2018, A.J.'s achievement in tonearm design in the SuperArm 9 was officially recognized by the Absolute Sound magazine with their prestigious Golden Ear Award. PERFORMANCE As stated in the “Mission Statement”, the goal for the Basis SuperArm has been simple, clear, and direct from the beginning: “To fully maximize the extraction of every detail from LP records, the full dynamics available from the grooves, without editorializing in the process”. Yet, there really was no way to know just how much more dynamics, imaging, and fine detail the records grooves really contained.  The SuperArm clearly shows that there is a significant increase in dynamics, bass depth, bass power, clarity, and imaging information within the grooves that we have never heard before from any tonearm.           Those who have heard the Basis SuperArm agree: the vinyl playback game has changed.  Hearing is indeed believing.  Vinyl and music lovers will be especially excited to hear the lifelike dynamics, truly opening up a new level of realism in vinyl playback.  EFFECTIVE LENGTH: 318mm PIVOT TO SPINDLE DISTANCE: 305mm TOTAL MASS: Approx. 1220g ACCESSORIES FURNISHED: Integral 4 foot (1.2 meter) tonearm cable, RCA or XLR balanced wiring. Engraved alignment gauge. Cartridge mounting screws and washers. All necessary tools for mounting and all adjustments. OPTIONAL ACCESSORIES: Mounting flange for mounting on non-Basis turntables. Machined aluminum mounting jig to position the SuperArm correctly on non-Basis turntables. TURNTABLE COMPATIBILITY: The A.J.Conti Transcendence or any turntable that can accommodate a 305mm pivot to spindle distance, has a platter height of 30mm or greater above the armboard surface, and is able to physically support the weight of a 1220 gram tonearm.

We love how much effort Panasonic has put into the GX800. While most manufacturers simply remove a load of flagship features and push their midrange TVs out to market almost hoping no-one notices, Panasonic has packed this set with fancy features (most notably Dolby Vision and HDR10+), has priced it incredibly aggressively, and sent us no fewer than three size variants to be picked apart. The effort and confidence has already been rewarded in the form of a five-star review of the 50in model, but can that form continue when scaled up to the rather unusual size of 58in? Yes, it can. In fact, the TX-58GX800B is actually even better value than its smaller sibling. Build It must be hard to make a big slab of screen look stylish, and it feels like Panasonic hasn’t wasted time trying to do so with the GX800. This is an exceptionally simple, staid design consisting of slightly glossy black bezels and a matte black stand. Panasonic has long gone for the utilitarian look, keen that its performance does the talking, and the GX800 typifies that approach. Sure enough, the chassis takes no attention away from the display, with those thin black bezels disappearing in a dimly lit room. The use of an edge LED backlight allows the set to remain very slim on the whole, and even at its thickest point it’s not particularly chunky, measuring a perfectly acceptable 6.5cm. Should you be placing the TV on a piece of furniture, the pedestal stand gives the TV a fairly compact footprint of 53 x 26cm. Features Around the back and to the left-hand side of the TV you’ll find three HDMI inputs, two USB sockets, ethernet, component video, optical out and a dedicated headphone output, as well as an aerial socket for live TV. The current TV norm is for there to be four HDMI sockets, but we don’t imagine many people finding three to be too few. It’s also worth pointing out that the only HDMI 2.1 feature supported by these HDMI 2.0-certified sockets is ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode), which senses when a games console is connected and automatically switches to Game mode. VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) and eARC (Enhanced Audio Return Channel) are not on board, though standard ARC is. Far more exciting on the features front is the inclusion of both of the currently available dynamic metadata HDR formats: Dolby Vision and HDR10+. While Dolby Vision is far and away the more prevalent of the two formats, with HDR10+ more or less limited to a handful of 4K Blu-rays and a bit of content on Amazon Prime Video – which actually still prioritises Dolby Vision when content is available in both formats – it’s great to know that you’re covered either way. Standard HDR10 is supported as well, of course, as is HLG. On top of Prime Video, the GX800 also offers Netflix in 4K and Dolby Vision, and all of the UK’s core catch-up apps (BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4 and My5) are present and correct. Unfortunately, the only pay-as-you-go movie-streaming app on board is Rakuten, and this is not in 4K or HDR, despite the labelling suggesting otherwise. The Panasonic is also lacking Now TV, BT Sport, Google Play Movies & TV, Spotify and Tidal. All inputs, apps and other features are accessed via Panasonic’s own operating system, called My Home Screen. It is vastly less snazzy than the rival systems offered by Samsung and LG, but is at least straightforward to navigate and pretty fluid in action. Picture For many, the appeal of Dolby Vision is the idea that you’re seeing a film or TV show exactly as intended, but we still find the default Dolby Vision settings too soft and warm. The good news is that, while some Dolby Vision settings are locked, you can adjust others, and by upping the sharpness and moving Colour Temp from Warm2 to Normal we’re able to get the punch and crispness that we enjoy while watching standard HDR10 with the extra, adaptive contrast offered by Dolby Vision’s dynamic metadata. We spend our first couple of hours with the GX800 with the Spider-Man: Homecoming 4K Blu-ray spinning, switching the TV’s Dolby Vision feature on and off to compare the picture performance. Having it switched on clearly produces the subtler, more nuanced image. The GX800 obviously has a fairly narrow contrast band to work with, and Dolby Vision makes the most of this, combining highlights and lowlights in a really balanced way and revealing fine details at both ends of the spectrum. Switching Dolby Vision off often results in a slightly brighter image, but it’s tonally flatter and a tad less insightful.  That isn’t to say the GX800’s performance with standard HDR10 content is poor. In fact, compare it directly with similarly wallet-friendly rival models and it’s a clear step up. While many such rivals tend to exaggerate colours and edges for maximum impact, the GX800 plays things far more even-handedly and is infinitely preferable over time. Colours are brilliantly judged, proving tonally natural and nuanced in their gradients. Subtle shades are smoothly blended and avoid the sort of blocking produced by less sophisticated sets, and that makes skin tones in particular appear natural and realistic. Ultimate brightness isn’t exceptionally high, particularly when compared to more expensive models, but the Panasonic works well within its limits, delivering plenty of bright detail and nicely clean whites. Black levels are a bit limited, too, but no more so than those of other edge-lit sets at this end of the market. The Panasonic’s backlight is actually far more uniform than most, with no blotchiness or clouding, although there is an obvious, thin band of light visible from the edges of the display, which is a bit of a shame. The black bars of a widescreen film aren’t terribly black, either. Motion is very good, though, so long as you turn the Intelligent Frame Creation down a little. On its default Mid setting, this motion processing is easily confused by tricky movement and makes everything look overly processed. But drop down to Min and you get a very effective balance of sharpening, smoothing and naturalness. We’re not quite talking Sony levels of motion excellence, but it isn’t a long way off. Switching to Fargo on 1080p Blu-ray, the Panasonic, if anything, is even more impressive. With SDR content, the GX800’s ultimate brightness limits aren’t so much of an issue, so it’s more or less as punchy as many more premium models. The image is once again fabulously natural in terms of colours, crisply defined without looking over-enhanced, and packed with detail. There are no flaws or inconsistencies to act as distractions, so you’re free to simply enjoy the film. Drop down to BBC local news in standard definition via the built-in Freeview tuner and the results are perfectly watchable. Colours are bright and vibrant without veering into garishness, and noise is kept fairly well in check considering the low resolution of the signal. Those eyeing up the GX800 as a large, affordable gaming monitor will be pleased to hear that, while the set doesn’t support VRR, it does boast very low input lag. We measured it at 14.6 seconds, which isn’t far off the lowest current TVs are able manage. One last thing to bear in mind is the viewing angles, which, while better than those of most similarly priced TVs and actually a little better than those of the smaller GX800 models we’ve already looked at, still aren’t amazing. Those who watch the lounge TV from the wider corners of the room simply won’t get an optimal performance. Sound Just like its 50in sibling, the TX-58GX800B produces clear voices with plenty of detail, as well as a nicely open and spacious soundstage, particularly when the Dolby Atmos mode is enabled. That said, audio isn’t projected terribly far into the room and there’s not a whole lot of weight or depth to bass. It really is worth adding a dedicated sound system, even if it’s only an affordable soundbar.  Verdict The 50in version of the GX800 is great, and this 58in model offers all of the same qualities in a significantly larger size for very little extra money, making it even better value when compared to rival sets.  If you’re in the market for a big, affordable TV, the TX-58GX800B should be right at the top of your list.

Not so long ago, a 49in TV was considered pretty huge – but not any more. Manufacturers now consider a 49in screen as small, and rarely produce sets with flagship features at that size. In fact, OLED TVs don’t go below 55in, at least not yet. All of which makes the Sony KD-49XG9005 a bit of an outlier. While it isn’t an OLED and doesn’t feature absolutely all of the bells and whistles in Sony’s arsenal, it’s closer to the top of the company’s 2019 range than one might expect. What’s more, it’s an absolute belter of a telly. Features The KD-49XG9005 is essentially a smaller sibling of the XG9505 TV, which is available in sizes ranging from 55in to 85in and which we've already reviewed in 65in form. It has a similarly understated design that boasts slim, dark bezels that effectively disappear once the lights are off. The splayed feet look decidedly awkward and require a fairly wide surface for the TV to stand upon, but are designed like that to accommodate a soundbar. The XG9005 doesn’t come with the new remote control bundled with the XG9505 models, making do with the older, more cluttered and line-of-sight-dependant zapper of previous TVs, which is a shame. Specs-wise, the downgrades from XG9505 to XG9005 are to the processor and the sound system. While XG9505s get Sony’s current top processor, the X1 Ultimate, the XG9005 gets the X1 Extreme. The latter lacks the former’s Object-based Super Resolution, which is designed to enhance the crispness of individual items on display by referencing them against a vast database of images. There's an argument that, at 49in, there’s less need for such technology. On the sound front, the XG9505’s fancy Acoustic Multi Audio speaker arrangement is missing from the XG9005, with a more typical, near-invisible speaker system taking its place. Almost every TV in Sony’s 2019 range runs Android 8.0 as its operating system, and the XG9005 is no different. With each update, Android TV gets a little more stylish, less cluttered and more customisable, but it’s still a long way behind the bespoke operating systems of LG’s and Samsung’s current TVs. Sony does at least overcome the catch-up app shortcomings of other Android TVs by adding YouView to its sets. That ensures you get the full roster – BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4 and Demand 5 – as well as other streaming apps such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Google Play Movies & TV. Those last three all deliver 4K and HDR, right up to Dolby Vision in the case of Netflix and Amazon. The TV does not support Samsung’s HDR10+ format, as is the case across Sony’s entire range. Only two of the set’s four HDMIs support 4K with HDR. This shouldn’t be an issue, but it’s worth bearing in mind that top-notch sources, including 4K Blu-ray players, 4K streamers and 4K consoles such as the PS4 Pro or Xbox One X, will need to be plugged into HDMI 2 or 3 in order to perform as they should. Gamers should note that an input lag score of 41.5ms in the dedicated Game mode is a bit slow by 2019 standards, but only the most hardcore gamers will notice any delay. Picture The XG9005 is packed with tweakable picture options, which would be overwhelming were the TV’s out-of-the-box settings not almost spot-on. It’s vital that you turn off the Light Sensor when watching non-HDR content (the option is unavailable when HDR is being received) and we recommend that you also disable the noise reduction options. Other than that, you just need to consider Live Colour – we set to High for HDR content and Medium for SDR, but it’s worth experimenting to find your personal preference. Playing Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.2 on 4K Blu-ray, the Sony immediately impresses with its punch and crispness. In fact, it makes the recently reviewed Samsung QE49Q70R look a little dull by comparison. Here, whites are pure and bright, edges are razor sharp and light-to-dark contrast is pronounced. There’s real solidity and three-dimensionality, and colours are both richer and more natural than they are from rival sets. There’s organic subtlety to skin tones, striking punch to neon lights and richness to sunsets. Motion has long been Sony’s forte and the XG9005 continues the trend. There’s just a touch of shimmer to exceptionally tricky bits of motion, but the general balance of sharpness and smoothness is spot on in the default Auto mode. You could eradicate the shimmer entirely by turning the motion processing off, but you’d introduce a little judder and blur, skewing the compromise the wrong way. Switching to The Hateful Eight on standard Blu-ray, the Sony once again proves a master of colour. The film is rather monochromatic, but the Sony digs up the colour in the open fires and candles and the faces of the characters, without boosting anything artificially. It does a great job with the intentional film grain, too, neither smoothing it into non-existence nor mistakenly enhancing it as some rival sets do.  Move into standard-def territory and the Sony does an admirable job in terms of detail, contrast and colours. While it doesn’t quite manage to smooth out the rough edges of the low-res signal as some the best upscalers around can do, the overall image is perfectly palatable. The only slight flaw in the Sony’s picture performance is its blacks. While dark detail is plentiful and bright highlights stand out strikingly against black backgrounds, the Sony doesn’t have the tight backlight control necessary to stop light bleeding from the bright parts of the image into those that should be dark. The black depth isn’t terribly weak – in the majority of images you’d hardly notice that the blacks aren’t entirely black – but some light does seep into the black bars at the top and bottom of the widescreen presentation. Sound While it lacks the Acoustic Multi Audio speaker arrangement of the XG9505 models, designed to make audio sound as if it’s coming directly from the screen, the XG9005 still sounds very impressive by class standards. This is a more direct, dynamic and fuller bodied presentation than we expect from smaller TVs, and there’s a surprising degree of space and atmosphere to the soundstage. It goes loud, too – just 50 per cent volume is more than enough for a decent movie audio experience in a standard sized room. Of course, while the Sony sounds good for a TV, it can’t compete with a half-decent soundbar, and we recommend you take advantage of those awkwardly splayed feet and add one. Verdict We’re used to 49in TVs being disappointingly downgraded over their larger siblings but, while not every spec has made it down from the XG9505, the XG9005 bucks that trend by offering a fair few fancy features. Clearly, Sony cares about those buyers who are limited to 49in but still want an excellent TV, and that’s just what it’s produced. This is a lovely TV to watch, it sounds good by prevailing standards, and its app selection leaves you wanting for little. Buy with confidence.

Such is their focus on flagship sets that TV manufacturers often overlook the mid-range when it comes to supplying us with review samples. That’s a huge shame, as this is where so much of the action is. These are TVs for enthusiasts who can identify the features they want while dismissing those they don’t need, and who can spot the perfect performance-per-pound balance. On that basis, they can sometimes be the best TVs in a manufacturer’s range. It’s also true that some manufacturers go the other way, delivering mid-range sets that cost only a little less than their flagship stablemates while offering a heavily downgraded, even half-cocked, performance. Thankfully, the Samsung UE49RU8000 is an example of the mid-range at its very best. This is a TV that offers most of the performance of the company’s excellent flagship 49in set with a significant discount. It is, in other words, a great buy. Features Take the RU8000 out of its box and attach the stand and there’s little indication that this is anything other than a flagship TV. The lighter finish and comparative prominence of the bezels make them look bigger, even though they aren’t. What’s more, thanks to its edge backlighting, the RU8000 is a tiny bit slimmer than its direct, full array-backlit sibling, the Q70R. Only the rather inelegant and plasticky feet let the side down stylistically. Samsung’s excellent One Connect solution, which sees all connections routed through a separate box connected to the TV by an almost impossibly thin cable, is missing from the RU8000 – however, it’s also missing from the Q70R. In fact, there’s currently not a 49in TV available that doesn’t necessitate source cables being plugged directly into its behind. In the case of the RU8000, these connections are arranged in a right-facing row on the back of the set and consist of four HDMIs (one of which is ARC-enabled), two USBs, an optical output, aerial and satellite inputs, and an ethernet socket for those who prefer a wired connection to the built-in wi-fi. As is the norm for modern Samsung TVs, there’s no physical headphone output, with Bluetooth featured instead. The quantum dots and direct backlight of the Q70R have been removed for the RU8000, but it’s otherwise a similar proposition specs-wise. For starters, the operating system is the same, and that makes the RU8000 far more pleasant to use than most non-Samsung TVs, thanks to fluid operability, intuitive organisation and an unparalleled library of streaming apps. That streaming library includes Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play Movies & TV and Rakuten in 4K and HDR; BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4 and Demand 5 for all of your catch-up needs; Plex and VLC for local streaming; and Spotify, Tidal and Deezer for music. The RU8000, like its QLED siblings, also features the Apple TV app, which contains the most comprehensive selection of pay-as-you-go 4K HDR films currently available. Samsung’s Ambient Mode, which is intended to make use of or disguise the TV when it’s not being watched, is exclusive to the company’s QLEDs so doesn’t make an appearance here, but that’s the only noticeably missing app and it’s not one that we think many will pine for. Picture As is standard for Samsung TVs, the RU8000 doesn’t support Dolby Vision but will handle the similar HDR10+ format (as well as standard HDR10 and HLG). We play the 4K Blu-ray of Bohemian Rhapsody and are immediately impressed with the results. The Q70R offers slightly brighter highlights and marginally more vibrant colours, but it’s surprising how close the RU8000 gets to the performance of its more expensive, QLED-based sibling.  It’s a brilliantly detailed image with sharp, clearly defined edges that render each scene with excellent depth and solidity. And those colours, while a little less vibrant than the Q70’s, are nicely judged, with a natural balance that rings true. You could even argue that the RU8000 is the better performer in this regard, as it avoids the slight over-egging of reds that we see on the Q70. Where the gap between the two models is most keenly felt is in contrast – the Q70 can combine dramatically dark blacks with piercingly bright highlights more effectively. The RU8000 can go relatively black and also rather bright, but not at the same time. It’s simply got a narrower contrast band, so you need to either prioritise brightness or black depth. But that’s not to say that you will be on the receiving end of a dull picture. While it’s not quite as dynamic as the Q70, the RU8000 is a punchy, enticing performer that merrily makes the most of this HDR10+ movie and the many HDR10 discs and streams we throw at it during testing. We switch to SDR and throw in some upscaling for the 1080p Fargo Blu-ray, and are satisfied by the natural, even-handed delivery. This is a film full of white and grey, with regular spots of contrasting colour, and it’s vital that a TV neither exaggerates nor downplays things tonally. The RU8000 gets it just right. The scene in which the kidnappers are pulled over is overwhelmingly dark, particularly when the witnesses are being chased down, and it’s clear that the RU8000 can’t go as black as a more premium backlit TV, let alone an OLED. That said, there’s lots of dark detail on offer and the backlight is agreeably uniform and free of patchiness. There’s a bit of blooming around bright objects on dark backgrounds (the car headlights, for example) but, for an edge-lit set without local dimming, we’re impressed by how controlled everything is. Viewing angles are reasonable by LCD standards, too, but obviously not up there with those of an OLED or flagship QLED. Drop down to standard-def via the built-in Freeview tuner and, while the RU8000 struggles with dense patterns, it’s comparable to the premium models at this size, once again balancing authenticity and vibrancy in satisfying style. Gamers will also be pleased by the RU8000’s super-low input lag of 13.1ms. It alsos has a couple of gaming-specific features (such as variable refresh rate) and picture settings (including a dark detail enhancer) that help to make it an excellent gaming monitor. Sound Sonically, the RU8000 is a perfectly decent, if unspectacular performer. Next to the Q70R, it’s lacking in bass weight and depth, but it does boast clear, well-projected dialogue, a solid midrange with a natural richness to voices, and a controlled, smooth treble. But, while you could certainly live with the TV’s own speakers, even a budget soundbar will prove a substantial upgrade. We heartily recommend that you add one to your shopping basket. Verdict The Samsung UE49RU8000 is a brilliant buy. In fact, by offering most of what makes the Q70R great at a reduced price, we’d say it’s actually an even better buy than its QLED-based sibling. It’s more of an all-rounder than the similarly priced Panasonic TX-50GX800B, too, and delivers more exciting HDR. If you’ve got the money, Sony’s KD-49XG9005 is, without doubt, the best 49in TV you can currently buy, but if you’re looking for something a little more affordable (maybe to squeeze a soundbar within your budget), the Samsung RU8000 is absolutely the telly to get.

The Samsung UE43RU7470 seems like impossibly good value. It ticks all the right tech boxes – HDR, 4K, an excellent smart platform and arguably the best TV user interface around – and all for just £429. At 43 inches, the UE43RU7470 is also a sensible size, potentially making it the kind of all-rounder that could be equally at home in the bedroom or living room. It’s worth noting that the Samsung UE43RU7470 is a Currys exclusive, though Samsung says it is technically identical to the other TVs in the range, including the UE43RU7400 and UE43RU7410. While this is likely to be true, we cannot confirm that the performance will be identical. So, this review refers specifically to the Samsung UE43RU7470. While it isn’t a premium Samsung TV, there’s nothing that feels cheap about the RU7470. At just shy of 6cm, it is still reasonably thin and nicely finished on the front and rear, much like the expensive QLED sets, although at 1.5cm, the bezel is considerably broader than those of the QLEDs. The large silver boomerang of a stand not only looks a bit daft, but also gives the TV a much bigger footprint than it needs. It may look better on the larger screen sizes of the series (50in, 55in and 60in), but on the 43in model, it’s almost as wide as the screen itself. On the plus side, the rear of the stand is hollow, leaving plenty of space to run your cables through and keep the back of your set tidy.  Compared to other models in the series, the UE43RU7470 has a shinier stand and more metallic look finish. The superb One Remote is, again, a more classy metal rather than the black plastic of the standard Samsung UE43RU7400. As with all the models in the range, there are three HDMI 2.0 ports, two USBs and an optical audio-out around the back, as well as ethernet and aerial sockets. It is, of course, wi-fi-enabled, too, which is handy because the RU7400 series features Samsung’s superb TV user-interface and smart platform. On it, you’ll find all the video apps you’re likely to need – Apple TV, Google Play Movies, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Rakuten and all of the TV catch-up services. Everything that should be delivered in 4K with HDR is, with the TV supporting HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG. There’s no Dolby Vision, though, which is a shame, but also the norm for Samsung TVs.  Like most of Samsung’s 2019 TVs, this set has the Bixby voice assistant built in. Talk to the remote and you can change the volume and switch channels and inputs. This gets better if you add the TV to a list of smart devices on your SmartThings, Alexa or Google Assistant platforms. That way you can use the Bixby function to voice activate other smart devices on your network. Sound The sound from modern flat panel TVs is rarely superb, not without assistance from a home cinema package or soundbar anyway. So, we’re not expecting great things as we listen to 10W of amplification powering the two speakers on the back of the Samsung UE43RU7470. However, we play the storm scene in Life Of Pi and are actually quite impressed. There are three major sound modes – Standard, Optimised and Ambient – each highlighting different parts of the soundtrack. Standard is the one we’re happiest with for films. It’s lacking at the bottom end and there’s no real surround element, but it’s where the audio is best for dynamics and detail.  Ambient mode boosts the midrange at the expense of some detail and dynamics, but also pushes the soundstage out further and adds a more immersive and arguably more cinematic feel. It’s also the best setting for listening to music. Optimised allows the TV to perform an analysis of your environment and adjusts the sound to suit your room. In our tests, it never quite works, maxing all the frequencies out into a bit of a blur of noise and echo, and is best avoided. Ultimately, we’re left with the usual conclusion – while this set sounds absolutely fine, even a budget soundbar will improve the audio dramatically. Verdict For a size of TV that is all too often overlooked, we’re delighted to see that Samsung has served up a stunner for the average household with the modestly priced and brilliantly performing UE43RU7470 range. With strong attention to detail, a broad range of colours and brilliant upscaling; you won’t find anything better at this price.
